The Costa Rican first tourist was Christopher Columbus, who come

Nearly 550 species of butterflies have been recorded in the country. Habitats include
two seacoast, highland and lowland forest sub alpine barren, marshes, rivers, lagoons
and forest swamps. An extraordinary system of national parks and private conservation
areas strives to protect 31% of the national territory. These wildlife areas provide
sanctuary to many species threatened by extinction due to the unchecked growth of
certain economic activities.
